Hmm, I always thought Sephiroth began to become the ruler of the planet because Jenova was originally the destined ruler, but the Cetra ‘foiled’ her plan. Sephiroth leading cause to bring back Jenova’s power and let her complete her path, after waiting all that time for Aerith to extinct their enemy.

Sephiroth becoming as powerful as he was, I had thought was because of him bringing power to Jenova, when we fight her, that excess power that was shared was then given to Sephiroth, being the final battle.

I still have a lot to think about for it, and it’s definitely something to study for other games too.

Was an amazing article, will there be another dive in for this game? It seems the tree is complete from what I know.

From Jenova’s point of view, she sure was destined to rule the planet. But I’m sure the Cetra would disagree! As for Sephiroth, he actually gets his power from Jenova (Hojo augmenting him with Jenova cells in the womb was what made him the strongest SOLDIER alive), though by the end of the game (and especially in Remake/Rebirth) he’s overshadowed Jenova to such a large degree that you could totally make an argument for him lending her strength instead.

I suppose it’s really up to your interpretation. It’s a complicated story, for sure.

As for another article, I’m kind of on the fence. As far as Kabbalah is concerned, yes I’ve definitely tapped the whole well for this game. But there are a lot of mystical influences on FF7 to explore, like Gnosticism, and Norse mythology features heavily in the games names and symbols (think Midgar, Nibelheim, Odin, etc).

On the other hand, I’ve put close to 300 hours into FF7 over the years (100 or so for the original, 60 for Remake, and 120 for Rebirth), and I’m feeling a bit burned out on it right now lol. Plus there are other games I’ve been playing like Diablo IV that are so ripe for this type of analysis.

We’ll see, I suppose. I’ll probably just start writing my thoughts on one or the other, and see which sustains my interest for longer

Glad you enjoyed the article!
